Backpack Drive 2018

Posted 6:31 PM by
Once again St. Dunstan's will partner with the National Center for Children and Families to provide filled backpacks to children in need. For many children in the DMV the money needed to provide backpacks and school supplies means their isn't a meal on the table or clothes to wear. So, children begin the school year another step behind their peers and can be easily discounted by their classmates for not having those supplies.

Last year we provided 25 backpacks. I believe that we can do better. Let's try to up our number of backpacks to 30! Two backpacks will be there as examples this Sunday. Please pick up a supply list flyer, head to your local store, select a backpack, and fill it with those items listed for a particular age group. Then return your backpack no later than August 19. That Sunday we will bless the backpacks and send them on to be given to children throughout the DMV.

A Backpack Stuff Party will be held at NCCF on Wednesday, August 15 at 6:00 p.m. Join me as we gather with others from the community to stuff more backpacks. For more information about this event and how to get there go here.

Vivanco Family Visit

Posted 6:25 PM by
Today I had the great joy of picking up the Vivanco Family from the airport for their visit with us. That joy was doubled by the generosity of others who have gifted their home for lodging and a van for moving them around during their stay. There is also continual thanksgiving for the support of children through Education Equals Hope.

On Sunday morning, July 22, we will have the opportunity to hear from both Cameron and Roberto during our worship and in a forum following the service. We hope that you will join us for this time to learn more about how you can be involved in their ministry.

Save the Date... Refugee Policy Update!

Posted 1:36 PM by

Join us at St. Dunstan’s for A State Department Briefing on Refugee Admissions and Assistance.

On Tuesday June 5 at 7:30 p.m. Ambassador Mark C. Storella, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration will appear at St. Dunstan’s Parish Hall to talk about the Administration’s refugee admission program and provide a broader perspective on refugee assistance around the world and their humanitarian diplomacy on behalf of refugees, including the latest information on Rohingya crisis in Myanmar and Bangladesh.  He will be able to answer our questions about current and future refugee admissions policy and provide guidance about how our community can take concrete action to help with refugee settlement here and refugee assistance abroad.

Ambassador Mark Storella, a member of the Senior Foreign Service, has a longstanding commitment to humanitarian affairs and human rights. He joined the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration in June 2016 with responsibility for admission of refugees to the United States and refugee programming in the Near East and Asia regions.

Let me know if you have any comments or questions.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Mark MacCarthy

HELP A REFUGEE FAMILY GET SETTLED HERE
St. Dunstan's is rallying to furnish an apartment for a newly-arriving refugee family who has nothing.  We need everything from forks to furniture - in good condition.  Please see what you could donate, and go to the link here to sign up.

Contact Fred Bentley (202)215-8340 or Ray Donnelly (301)320-6146 with questions.  Small items can be left in the choir room at church (through the beanbag room).  Contact Fred Bentley about pickup of large items.

Needed:
Furniture - Kitchen items - Linens and Household Supplies - Toiletries - Cleaning Supplies

When our family arrives, we'll be organizing a move-in weekend, and gathering additional items appropriate to our family, such as baby supplies, food, and clothing.

You can make life better for a family struggling to get a new start in a new country.  As Jesus said, "I was a stranger, and you took me in."
