2018- 2019 Choir Season

Posted 5:18 PM by

Our Adult Choir will start the new church year on Sunday, September 2 in preparation for Homecoming Sunday (Sept. 9). The choir is open to any interest Adults and High School-Aged Youth.

Have you been thinking about giving choir a try? Do you want to dust off those music skills from childhood, or would you like to learn how to read music for the first time? If so, choir is for YOU.

What’s Required?

In order to sing with the choir, all that’s required is a passion for singing (or at least an inkling of one), and a desire to help us to enhance the worship at St. Dunstan’s with music. Our season runs from September 2 until mid-to-late May.

What’s Not Required?

No Experience Required: We sing a wide variety of music in a range of styles and levels of difficulty, but time is spent in rehearsal to make sure everyone feels comfortable with their part, no matter what we’re singing.  If you’ve never sung in a choir before, or if you’ve sung in choir for many years (or many years ago), you’re welcome in the choir at St. Dunstan’s. The ability to read music is helpful, but not at all required (and extra help is always available).

No Long-Term Commitment Required: While a number of our choir members have sung with us for many years, you are very welcome to join us this fall to “kick the tires” and find out if choir is for you. We sing most weeks on Sunday morning, and also for special worship services during the church year, such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Easter. We also sometimes let our hair down and sing more popular music for various other events in the life of our church. If you'd only like to sing for special services, or if you can join us for only short period of time during the year, that's OK!

No Inconvenient Rehearsals or Perfect Attendance Required: Choir rehearsals will be held one hour before the service, which gives us time to warm up our voices, run through the music for the upcoming service, and work on music for upcoming services. There will be occasional evening rehearsals, but never more than one a month, and will be scheduled for a time most convenient for the group. While choir members are ask to attend every rehearsal possible (it’s not a choir if only one person shows up), we completely understand if you need to miss one every once in a while.

Any Questions?

If you have any questions, e-mail Michael at music@stdunstansbethesda.org

See you in choir this fall!

Please join our choir director, Michael Austin, and            the 18th Street Singers for their annual winter                  concert, Journeys. This is a civic choir in our city that      sang here at St. Dunstan's this past spring.

This concert explores the many different paths we all take throughout our lives. Themes of this concert include  traveling the roads that lead us home, grappling with          feelings of distance and longing for loved ones, and spiritual journeys that help us to better understand ourselves.

Featuring a mix of genres, we'll perform works by Robert Schumann, Ralph               Vaughan Williams, Moses Hogan, Pärt Uusberg, Stephen Paulus, Ted Hearne, and     more. Highlights of this performance will include "Santiago" from Path of                 Miraclesby  Joby Talbot and Underneath the Stars, originally performed by Voces8. They'll also be premiering Michael's own setting of Emma Lazarus' "The New          Colossus" (i.e. the poem on the Statue of Libery - "Give me your tired, your poor,     your huddled masses yearning to be free.."), and I'll be conducting the choir as they   sing an Estonian pop song.

The concert will take place on Saturday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday,          January 28 at 5:30 p.m. at First Trinity Lutheran Church (309 E St NW,                Washington, DC). Tickets are available at Eventbrite for $15 if you buy early, and $20 at the door. Free student tickets are also available with a valid ID. 1/3 of the proceeds from each ticket will be donated to Community Family Life Services, which provides short-term crisis assistance and supports women who are returning home following a period of incarceration by assisting them as they move into permanent self-sufficiency. Please see Michael if you have any questions!

Creation Season 2017

Posted 6:30 PM by

Every October, St. Dunstan's celebrates God's creation in our worship services, and this year's theme is The Seasons. Each of the first four weeks of October will be dedicated to a season of the year - Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Music in both services will focus on nature, creation, and stewardship of our world. We'll supplement our liturgy with readings of seasonal prayers and poetry by Joyce Rupp. Our worship space will also be transformed each week with art and flowers that reflect each season.

Also, mark your calendars - on Oct. 29, we'll commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.

Music Ministry 5/29/2016

Posted 6:35 PM by
This year in the Music Ministry at St. Dunstan's has been a great blessing, thanks in part to our choirs, who wrapped up their program year this past Sunday! Our Children's Choir had a great time each week learning new music, playing and singing, and learning more about their faith through song. We also had a lovely time of fellowship, prayer and reflection during our Thursday evening suppers and "Pajama Prayers." The Adult Choir did an excellent job in leading us in worship this year, singing for regular and special worship services with dedication and servant hearts. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, this choir was supplemented by choral scholars from Whitman High School and our new section leader, John Blakeslee.

If you've noticed the impact these additional singers have made in the quality of worship at St. Dunstan's, please talk to Jeff about ways you could financially support the choir and help us to continue the choral scholar program next year.

Thursday night choir rehearsals are suspended for the summer, but watch your Trailblazer for announcements about when we will resume again in September. We love for you to join us in the Fall!
