Today's Message from
St. Dunstan's
August 7, 2020
From the Rector
Dear friends,
You may have noticed that you haven't heard from me in a few days. While my family and I are all healthy and doing fine, I realized earlier this week that I needed to take my foot off the gas a bit in order to attend to some crucial self-care. The stress of the past few months has taken its toll on all of us (me very much included), and I discovered that I have to slow my pace for a time in order to have the physical, emotional, and spiritual energy to lead the parish into the fall. I also think it's important to practice what I preach!
I plan to resume a regular, if not daily, practice of sharing reflections again in September, but for the remainder of August I anticipate just sending out updates and schedule reminders as needed during the week. (This also will give your Inboxes a break from the volume of St. Dunstan's email!)
I look forward to seeing many of you at this weekend's online offerings (see below), and I remain only a call, text, or email away if you need anything. Please be gentle with yourselves and have a restful, restorative weekend.
Wishing you deep peace,
This Weekend with St. Dunstan's
This Afternoon: Community Fellowship Time
Join your St. Dunstan's friends for an hour or so of connection and conversation! Use this Zoom link TODAY, August 7, at 5 p.m.  (Meeting ID: 842 3801 8662) There is no agenda beyond catching up with one another. Come and see - and invite a friend!
Saturday Morning: Soul Sisters
The St. Dunstan's Soul Sisters, our women's group, will hold its next monthly meeting electronically tomorrow, August 8, from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. All St. Dunstan's women - and friends! - are welcome to join this time of prayer, reflection, connection, and support.
Given that we all could use a booster shot of fortitude about now, this month we'll tell each other stories — stories about resilient women we have known in real life. Do you have a grandmother, a dear friend, a coworker or someone who was able to rally herself to get through the hurdles she encountered, perhaps helped by her faith? Bring her story to the Soul Sisters this Saturday, and we’ll listen and talk about what can inspire us in these difficult times.
Here is the link for joining the meeting: Soul Sisters Zoom Link (Meeting ID: 705 712 806). If you know of folks who you think would appreciate this kind of conversation, please feel free to share the link with them. Just give a heads up to Patty at rector@stdunstansbethesda.org, as she will need to let them in from the Waiting Room. For further information about St. Dunstan's Soul Sisters, please contact Sue Carroll.
Sunday Morning: Sunday Worship with St. Dunstan's
Please join us for worship via Zoom and Facebook Live this Sunday, August 9, 2020 at 10 a.m., the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost. Our Seminarian Intern, Robin Reed, will preach. To participate in the Zoom meeting, please use this link, which will go live beginning at 9:50 a.m.; the Meeting ID is 826 4027 2649.  Immediately following worship, stay online for Coffee Hour!
Reaching Out
In the past, St. Dunstan's has donated funds toward schooling and feeding one child for a year at Buen Pastor, an Episcopal School in Quito, Ecuador where our missionaries, the Vivancos, oversee the school. For the past 29 years, Buen Pastor has served a vulnerable community, including orphans and those living with addiction, by providing a range of community development programs.
The cost of feeding and educating one child at Buen Pastor is $39 per month, or $468 a year. We as a parish have decided to continue to support Buen Pastor with a gift for one year of $468 from our Outreach budget. In addition, we can support additional children for the year by collecting donations from St. Dunstan's parishioners. For every 12 individuals or households who contribute $39, we have enough to feed and educate an additional child. We have reached our goal of educating and feeding one additional student for a year, and now we're well on our way toward funding a second. Your donation can make that possible!
If you would like to help support a child at Buen Pastor, please make your check for $39 (or more, if you'd like!) payable to St. Dunstan's, with "Buen Pastor, e=h" in the memo line. You may mail your donation to the church (5450 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, 20816); the mailbox is secure and is cleared regularly.
Thank you to those parishioners who already sponsor a child for one year. We appreciate everyone's contribution to this project!
