"Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.' Then I said, 'Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.' But the Lord said to me, 'Do not say, "I am only a boy"; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord." Jeremiah 1:4-8
Ministry with Young People
Ministry with those in grades 5 through 12 is primarily a ministry of relationship and mentoring, as young people grow into mature Christians and full participants in the life of St. Dunstan's. Young people are encouraged to take up ministry alongside adults in worship and service - as ushers, readers, Eucharistic ministers, and any other ministry of the church. Lifelong Christian formation for youth is held each Sunday from 9:50 am to 10:35 am in the Youth Room downstairs.
St. Dunstan's offers programs that are specifically designed for those in this age group. These programs will include times for fun and fellowship, study and formation, service and outreach, and prayer and worship. While some programs will be structured for those in all seven grade levels - some will also be divided between those in Middle School (6th-8th grade) and High School (9th-12th grade). There will be events and activities for youth from St. Dunstan's and their friends; as well as events which will involve the larger community, our diocese, our province and even the whole of The Episcopal Church.
Though open to people of all ages, the role of acolyte has traditionally been a ministry for youth. Young people are vital to the worship experience of all as they assist the clergy and other lay leadership in liturgy. This ministry is one of service and dignity through leading processions, assisting with preparing the table for communion, and other duties at special liturgies.
Formation for youth in grades 6-12 takes place each Sunday during the program year from 9:50 to 10:35 a.m. This gathering is held in the youth room and will include community building, study, prayers and fellowship. Treats, coffee and other beverages are provided.
This gathering of youth and adult leaders is usually offered once each month. Sometimes these programs will be with youth from other Episcopal Churches in Montgomery County or the Diocese. This is a time for building relationships through fellowship, prayer and service, and includes a meal. All events are included on the parish calendar.
Youth are offered the opportunity to enter a program that leads to confirmation at the beginning of their freshman year. The program includes formation classes, retreat opportunities, service experiences and developing a relationship with a mentor. The liturgy of confirmation takes place at the National Cathedral.
While being involved in service and mission will be an on-going part of all youth programs in the parish, there will also be an experience of mission offered each summer for both middle and high school youth. These opportunities will be both local and far away, as we fulfill our baptismal promises to seek and serve Christ in all persons and strive for justice and peace.
